A jumping jack is built for narrow, deep work. It concentrates its force into a small foot, which is what packs soil properly at the bottom of a trench. That makes it the right tool for backfilling after underground conduit, water lines, footings and post holes.
Use a plate compactor instead when you are working across wide, flat areas in gravel or sand. Use a jumping jack when the space is tight or the soil is clay or silt. Backfill compacted the wrong way settles later, and settling is what cracks slabs and pulls conduit out of alignment.
