What a Home Generator Install Involves

Backup power

A standby generator sits outside like an air conditioner, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself when the power drops. The install is mostly electrical work: sizing, the automatic transfer switch, and tying it into your panel safely.

What we handle:

  • Load calculation: whole-home coverage or just the essentials like heat, sump pump, fridge and well pump

  • Automatic transfer switch installation at your panel

  • Coordination with a licensed gas fitter for the fuel connection

  • ESA notification and inspection, so the install is documented for your insurer

We install and service all major generator brands, and we'll tell you honestly whether your home needs whole-home coverage or a smaller essential-loads setup.

The Power Goes Out. Your House Doesn't Notice.

Charged Electric installs standby generators for homes across New Hamburg, Wilmot Township and Kitchener-Waterloo. Ice storms and summer outages don't ask permission; a properly installed generator means the sump keeps pumping and the furnace keeps running.

Backup Power

Starts Itself in Seconds
The transfer switch senses the outage and starts the generator automatically, whether you're home or away.
Sized to Your Home
Whole-home or essentials-only: we run the load calculation and quote both options so you can pick with real numbers.
Licensed, Insured, ESA Inspected
ECRA/ESA licensed 7011473 and fully insured. The wiring and transfer switch are inspected and documented, which your home insurer will want.
Service After the Install
Checks and repairs to keep it start-ready, including generators we didn't install.

Whole Home or Just the Essentials?

Sized right

Not every home needs every circuit backed up. A smaller generator covering the furnace, sump pump, refrigerator, well pump and a few lights costs less and still carries you through a multi-day outage. A whole-home unit keeps everything running like nothing happened.

How we help you choose:

  • List what actually matters to your household during an outage

  • Run the load calculation on those circuits

  • Quote both options upfront, with the trade-offs explained plainly

Ask about our whole-home generator installs when we quote yours; homeowners we've done this for are happy to be references. Request a quote and we'll get back to you within one business day.

They installed a whole home generator for us. Top notch job! Everything went tickity boo. A lot of work involved but the trades were all very professional and explained the job to us as we went along. Other contractors wouldn’t even return our calls. Highly recommend! Local too!

I had them come help me with issues when I had my Lyric Thermostat. On time (early), pet friendly (did not mind my hyper chocolate lab) and price range very reasonable. I would highly recommend Charged Electric in the future.

Backup Generator Questions

That's a load calculation, not a guess. An essentials setup covering the furnace, sump pump, fridge, well pump and some lights needs far less capacity than whole-home coverage. We calculate both and quote both, so you choose with real numbers.

It depends on the generator size, the transfer switch, the gas line run and where the unit sits. We quote the complete installed project upfront, and the number you approve is the number you pay.

The electrical side requires a notification filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, which we handle along with the inspection. The gas connection is done by a licensed gas fitter, and we coordinate that as part of the project.

A standby generator starts itself and switches your house over automatically, even when you're away. A portable is cheaper but needs someone home with cords and fuel, and it must never be plugged into a dryer outlet: backfeeding can kill a line worker. A transfer switch is the safe way to connect any generator.

Standby generators run brief self-test cycles and need periodic service to stay start-ready. We service and repair all major brands, including generators we didn't install, so a unit that's sat untouched for years can be brought back to reliable.

We install and service home standby generators across New Hamburg, Baden, New Dundee, Wilmot Township, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Stratford, Tavistock and Wellesley. Call +1 (519) 469-9797 or request a quote and we'll respond within one business day.
