What Sanitary Electrical Means in Practice

Sanitary installations

On a food floor, the electrical system is part of the sanitation story. A junction box that pools water, a cable run that can't be cleaned under, or a corroding fitting above a line is a harbourage point and an audit finding, not just a maintenance problem.

What a sanitary installation includes:

  • Washdown-rated wiring methods: sealed conduit systems, stainless or non-metallic boxes, liquid-tight fittings

  • NEMA 4X devices and enclosures in wet zones, stepping up to IP69K where high-pressure hot washdown hits directly

  • Hygienic routing: standoffs and self-draining surfaces, so wash water sheds instead of pooling

  • Stainless washdown motors and sealed connections on process and conveyor equipment

  • Layouts that keep panels and disconnects out of spray zones where possible, sealed where not

Our crews follow your GMPs and food safety procedures on the floor, and Charged Electric carries ISNetworld prequalification for plants that require verified contractors.

NSF/3-A Design Principles
Hygienic design applied to electrical: self-draining surfaces, minimal horizontal ledges, and materials that stand up to your cleaning chemistry.
Installed in Your Windows
Rough-in and tie-ins planned into sanitation windows, off-shifts and shutdowns, so installation never costs you a production day.
GMP-Trained, ISNetworld Prequalified
Crews follow your GMPs and food safety procedures on the floor, with ISNetworld prequalification for plants that require contractor verification.

Stainless Washdown Motors, Supplied and Swapped

Washdown motors

Motors take more washdown abuse than any other electrical asset in the plant. A standard motor in a spray zone fails early and fails messy; a washdown-duty motor with sealed connections runs for years in the same spot.

What we handle on the motor side:

  • Stainless washdown-duty motor supply and replacement on conveyors, pumps and mixers

  • Liquid-tight, sealed connections built to survive daily washdown and cleaning chemicals

  • VFDs mounted out of spray zones, with washdown-rated operators at the equipment

  • Planned swaps inside sanitation windows, or 24/7 response when a line is down

  • Motor circuits tested and documented after every replacement

If the same motor keeps failing, the fix is usually the spec, not the brand. Request a quote and we'll get back to you within one business day.

They installed a whole home generator for us. Top notch job! Everything went tickity boo. A lot of work involved but the trades were all very professional and explained the job to us as we went along. Other contractors wouldn’t even return our calls. Highly recommend! Local too!

I had them come help me with issues when I had my Lyric Thermostat. On time (early), pet friendly (did not mind my hyper chocolate lab) and price range very reasonable. I would highly recommend Charged Electric in the future.

Sanitary Electrical Questions

The X is corrosion resistance. Both ratings protect against hose-directed water, but NEMA 4X enclosures also withstand the corrosive cleaning and sanitizing chemicals used on food floors. In a plant that washes down daily, plain NEMA 4 hardware corrodes from the outside in, which is why we specify 4X in wet and chemical zones.

For most zones, yes: NEMA 4X is rated for hose-directed water and corrosion. Where equipment takes close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature washdown, we step up to IP69K-rated devices, the rating created specifically for that duty.

A motor built to survive daily washdown: sealed housing, often smooth stainless steel, gasketed junction box and shaft seals that keep water and cleaning chemicals out. We supply and install them on conveyors, pumps and mixers, with liquid-tight connections to match.

Yes, and it's common work for us. We survey the plant, rank the worst zones first, usually where audits flag corrosion or water ingress, and phase the retrofits through sanitation windows and shutdowns so production keeps running.

Yes. Our crews follow your plant's GMPs and food safety procedures, including hygiene, PPE and sign-in requirements, and Charged Electric carries ISNetworld prequalification for plants that require verified contractors.
