What the Ontario Fire Code Expects

Compliance

Emergency and exit lighting is one of the few building systems the law requires you to test on a schedule, and one of the easiest to fall behind on. Most facilities that fail a fire inspection on lighting didn't know they were behind.

What a compliant program includes:

  • Monthly function tests of emergency lights and exit signs

  • Annual full-duration tests, where battery units must carry their full required run time

  • Failed batteries, heads and exit signs repaired or replaced, most on the same visit

  • Test records maintained in the format fire inspectors ask to see

  • Recurring scheduled visits, so compliance never depends on someone remembering

One contract can cover every building in your portfolio, on one schedule with one set of records.

Where Units Fail and Why It Matters

Common findings

Battery units degrade silently. The pilot light glows, the monthly button test passes, and the battery still can't carry a real outage. The annual full-duration test is where the truth comes out.

What we find most often:

  • Battery packs past their service life that pass a 30-second test and die at 20 minutes

  • Exit signs with burnt lamps or dead LED boards

  • Remote heads knocked out of aim or disconnected during renovations

  • Coverage gaps after layout changes, where egress paths moved but the lighting didn't

If your log book has gaps or the date of your last full-duration test is a mystery, start with a baseline inspection. Request a quote and we'll respond within one business day.

They installed a whole home generator for us. Top notch job! Everything went tickity boo. A lot of work involved but the trades were all very professional and explained the job to us as we went along. Other contractors wouldn’t even return our calls. Highly recommend! Local too!

I had them come help me with issues when I had my Lyric Thermostat. On time (early), pet friendly (did not mind my hyper chocolate lab) and price range very reasonable. I would highly recommend Charged Electric in the future.

Emergency Lighting Questions

The Ontario Fire Code requires monthly function tests plus an annual test where battery units must run for their full required duration. We run both on a standing schedule and keep the dated records, so your building is always inspection-ready.

The building owner is responsible for making sure testing happens and is documented. Using a licensed electrical contractor means failed units get properly repaired or replaced on the same visit, and the records hold up when the fire inspector reviews them.

A dated log showing the monthly and annual tests, what failed, and what was corrected. Gaps in the log are treated as tests that didn't happen. Our reports are built to hand over exactly as inspectors expect to see them.

They get repaired or replaced, usually batteries or complete heads. We quote anything beyond same-visit fixes before doing the work, then retest so the log shows a pass, not an open deficiency.

Yes, portfolio contracts are common: one schedule, one contractor and one set of records across all your buildings, instead of chasing separate vendors and log books at every address.

We inspect and test emergency lighting across Southwestern Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Stratford, New Hamburg and Wilmot Township. Call +1 (519) 469-9797 or request a quote and we'll respond within one business day.
